Steve Chance, living in Santa Barbara in the early ‘90s, was passionate about family, software design, and surfing. While chasing the waves, his skin was constantly rubbed raw by his wetsuits and boards, and he was determined to stop painful chafing.
Petroleum jelly is messy, degrades wetsuits, and he knew that was out of the question. Using heat from a kitchen appliance, Mr. Coffee®, Steve blended plant-based ingredients and invented the recipe that inspired what became an iconic brand in countries around the world.
Fast forward to 1996 at the Los Angeles Marathon®, hundreds of entrants wanting to avoid painful foot blisters and body chafing, lined up to buy the Body Glide anti-chafe balm.
We Started a Revolution
Word of mouth – “Body Glide is a game changer” – was immediate, and within weeks Body Glide was in coast to coast. REI was the first national retailer to offer Body Glide, soon joined by chains and specialty stores in Canada, the UK and beyond.
